The typical workflow for packaging and printing is: design—plate making—printing—die-cutting. Specifically, the design stage involves using label-design software to create and layout the graphic designs for product packaging. Once the packaging graphics are finalized, the next step is plate making. After that, the actual printing process begins, during which various common printing techniques can be employed to reproduce the designs—such as hot stamping, UV printing, embossing, debossing, and texture pressing. Finally, die-cutting transforms the printed sheets into finished products. Today, we’ll introduce several common printing processes used in the packaging and printing workflow.
Several common printing processes in the packaging and printing industry:
1. Lamination: Also known as "plastic coating," "glue mounting," or "film application," lamination involves applying a transparent plastic film onto the surface of a printed material through heat pressing. This process serves to protect the print and enhance its glossiness, while also making the colors of the images and text appear more vivid. Additionally, lamination provides water- and stain-resistant properties. It can be divided into two main stages: surface finishing and shaping. Lamination is widely used for the surface decoration and protection of book covers, photo albums, commemorative books, postcards, product manuals, wall calendars, maps, and other similar items.
2. Hot Stamping (Gold and Silver): Hot stamping is a common printing and decorative technique, also known as "hot foil stamping." The process involves heating a metal printing plate and applying foil to press gold-colored text or designs onto the printed material. Silver hot stamping is similar to gold hot stamping, except that it uses different materials. Gold hot stamping produces a golden sheen, while silver hot stamping yields a silvery sheen. The characteristics of gold and silver hot stamping include clear, aesthetically pleasing patterns with vivid and striking colors, making it frequently used for logo printing.
3. UV Printing: This is a printing process that uses ultraviolet light to dry and cure inks, making it one of the most important printing techniques in the printing industry. Its key features include enhancing the gloss and artistic effect of the printed product, as well as effectively highlighting the subtle nuances and outlines of the images and text.
4. Embossing and Debossing: Using a raised die (positive die) to apply pressure and imprint the surface of a printed material into a three-dimensional relief pattern—where certain areas of the print are raised, creating a sense of depth and visual impact—is called embossing. Conversely, debossing is achieved by using a recessed die (negative die) under pressure. The key characteristics of these techniques are their distinct relief effect, which can enhance the three-dimensionality and artistic appeal of the printed material.
